PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program, supported by a three-year capacity-building program from the Federal DHHS Office of Minority Health, seeks to enhance the administrative and programmatic ability of minority-serving organizations address the HIV/AIDS epidemic by providing free assistance. Services available from CNYHSA under this grant include:
  • one-on-one technical assistance to help individual organizations and collaborative groups address specific needs.
  • leadership development programs and workshop series which provide opportunities for administrators, managers, and volunteers to learn more about potential solutions to common needs.
  • resource products which provide reference materials and management tools recipients can share with others.

Any community-based, minority-serving organization with interest in HIV/AIDS can be eligible to receive assistance. For more information, please call Gerald Richmond, CNYHSA Deputy Director and Project Coordinator, or Candace Murray, CNYHSA Senior Planner, at (315) 472-8099.

Program Priorities

  • Leadership Involvement through service planning and inter-agency coordination and collaboration, support for efforts of faith-based entities, and promotion of expanded civic and media awareness and greater com-community response.
  • Program Development through introduction of culturally sensitive approaches to increase the effectiveness of services; client behavioral change and life skills development; expanded testing, prevention, and outreach services; and organizational growth and development (e.g. visioning and strategic planning, membership retention; program development and sustainability, management systems, governance, grant writing, and financial management)

Program Resources/Consultant Panel

The program's resource panel includes:  CNYHSA staff; ECQ Group, a NYC consulting company whose diverse staff have over 70 years ex perience in managing health and social services programs and providing capacity building services to minority and HIV/AIDS service organizations; and other experts whose specialized knowledge can be brought to bear on specific technical assistance needs.

Our Workshop Series

The Syracuse Area HIV/AIDS Technical Assistance Program is proud to announce its workshop series of leadership development and special topic programs for staff and volunteers of minority-serving organizations in Central New York. All workshops are provided at no cost.

♦ A Leadership Development Program focusing on the needs of midlevel managers, supervisors, and leaders associated with HIV/AIDS service providers.

♦ An Advanced Case Management Series which addresses the needs of experienced case workers at HIV service organizations to help them deal with the increasingly complex demands of HIV case management. Topics for workshops have been selected based on the results of needs assessment process and recommendations from the Case Management Committee of the Central New York HIV Care Network.

♦ A Grant Writing Series featuring one-on-one, intensive grant writing workshops which address finding sources of grant support, proposal writing, dealing with the requirements of foundation and government RFPs, and finding and using data in grant writing.

♦ A Cultural Competence, Awareness, and Diversity Series which encompasses basic concepts of cultural competence and specifics related to both ethnic and racial minorities and HIV related behavioral or cultural subgroups including drug users, gender orientation, mental health, homelessness, etc.

♦ A Literacy Series featuring sessions addressing different aspects of literacy which emerged from a needs assessment process: (1) low general literacy skills both in English and in other primary languages and its impact on effective provider and client communications and (2) limited health literacy skills, particularly with HIV related medical terminology and regimens.

(Note: Registration is required for all workshops)
