The Central New York HIV Care Network kicked off World AIDS Day activities on November 10-11, 2009 in the Goldstein Auditorium at Schine Student Center, Syracuse University. The AIDS Memorial Quilt Exhibition presented the campus community as well as the general community an opportunity to view 17 Quilts produced by the Syracuse NAMES Project, which assists individuals, families and organizations in making Quilt panels to memorialize loved ones lost to AIDS. Approximately 400 people attended this two-day event.
Two area high schools, Canastota and Corcoran, participated in tours of the exhibition. Scores of volunteers participated in event planning and promotion, and general staffing duties during the event. More than 25 area merchants contributed products and gift certificates for a silent auction conducted over the two days. A Quilt panel was dedicated by Lambda Sigma Upsilon at the Closing Ceremony in honor of their founding Brother who died of AIDS. The Fraternity recorded a video and is challenging other Chapters across New York State to make panels in order to construct a 12x12 Quilt.
On November 16, 2009, Network members and staff held a smaller Quilt Exhibition in the West Genesee High School library. Assistant Principal, Marcia Ranieri and Sandy Brown, Health Teacher, worked with the Network to coordinate this event. More than 400 students viewed the 8 Quilts on display. We hope to make this an annual event.
On World AIDS Day, December 1, 2009, the Network held a candlelight march from St. Paul’s Cathedral to the Service of Remembrance and Hope at Plymouth Congregational Church with a Bread and Soup Supper to follow. Nearly 30 people participated in the candlelight march. At the ceremony, the Network honored Lambda Sigma Upsilon, OrangeAID, Sex S.M.B.A.L.S., LGBT Resource Center, and West Genessee High School for their valuable contributions to HIV/AIDS Community Awareness, particularly among youth, a growing segment of those becoming infected with HIV. Approximately 80 people were in attendance. A joint Proclamation was issued from the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County. Read the Proclamation.
The Southern Tier's World AIDS Day event was held Friday, December 4 from 6-9pm. The Network was present at this event at Binghamton University Downtown Atrium, and we assisted by bringing 9 Quilts from the Syracuse NAMES project to the event. It was a wonderful observance which included African drumming and dancing.
On behalf of the Network, I'd like to thank you for your support of this year’s World AIDS Day events. We continue to urge everyone to look for ways to help promote HIV/AIDS awareness through dissemination of HIV/AIDS information that may help to replace stigma, fear and discrimination with understanding, compassion and support. The Central New York HIV Care Network and its member programs stand ready to provide information and answer questions for anyone interested in learning more about the epidemic.
Sincerely,
Stephen E. Waldron, Ph.D.
Network Coordinator
