CNYHSA ANNUAL/NOVEMBER 2007 BOARD MEETING featured an address by Nancy Smith, Executive Director, Health Advancement Collaborative of Central New York (HACCNY) on Priorities and Progress:  a Report from HACCNY which outilined HACCNY's mission, history, and current program objectives.  HACCNY brings together employers, hospitals, physicians, insurers, and consumers to address ways to advance high quality health care, access, and safety while decreasing or maintaining costs.

CNYHSA APRIL 2007 BOARD MEETING featured a presentation by Cynthia Morrow, MD, Onondaga County Commissioner of Health on Positive Partnerships which outlined major public health concerns and addressed and the role of the Health Department in working with community organizations to develop effective solutions.  The Board also heard from St. Joseph's Hospital and CNY Dialysis Center leadership on 
results of efforts to develop a joint center as an alternative to the proposals reviewed by CNYHSA.  Terry Richmond, CNYHSA Deputy Director, reported on CNYHSA's recent study on behavioral health, completed for the Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization, a congressional initiative to assess community and military-related health care needs.

NEW SHORTAGE AREA DESIGNATIONS  In 2007 and 2008, CNYHSA was successful in securing 12 federal Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) designations.  Primary Care HPSA’s were approved by US Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) for: Rome and Camden in Oneida County, Hamilton in Madison County, Canton-Potsdam, Gouverneur, Ogdensburg, and Star Lake in St. Lawrence County, Carthage in Jefferson County, Auburn in Cayuga County.  Jefferson, Hamilton, and Steuben counties were also designated as Mental Health HPSA's.  These designations provide incentives for underserved areas in recruiting practitioners and in qualifying for federal and state grants.
